Watercolor and Ink Still Lifes

The painting class has been learning about watercolor paints. After some initial technique lessons and practice, the first watercolor painting students completed was this still life. Students painted the flowers and vase first and then drew a contour drawing of the objects with sharpie on top. I think it is a great way to start students into painting life objects. It doesn't have to be perfect and is interesting to look at. Some students really enjoyed it and others did not.

The beginning art class has been studying the element of line. Students learn about the different uses of line in art. They learn to draw contour, blind contour and gesture drawings. As a culminating project student are given two squares with lines drawn on them, they have to glue the squares onto their own paper and complete a non-objective line drawing. The beginning projects in most of my classes revolve around the students' names. In Art A students learn about graffiti and create their own tag, in Art B students create their own logo, and in Photo A students create a name collage.

It Feels Like A New Classroom!

So after teaching in this school for a full year, I decided I wasn't happy with my room. Notice in the following picture that the room was designed to be both an art room and a computer lab. I had 25 computers at the back of the room and 30 drafting tables squished in the front of the room. The problems:
1. Students sat with their back to me.
2. Students were squished.
3. It was impossible to get in between the two rows when students were seated.
4. I had to babysit the computers all day long, keep students off of them when they weren't supposed to be on them.

I approached my principal about moving the computers into the back room, as seen here.

The purple wall in the picture was a recently added wall that expanded the dark room, since we are not teaching dark room photography any more. I really only needed/wanted the original darkroom. If the wall were removed it would be the exact same square footage used in the art room to hold the computers.

Thankfully, I made a good argument and my principal agreed with me. Here is the finished result, that I am absolutely thrilled with.

The new computer lab is going to be a little tight and it will be very hot for the next couple of weeks, but I think it is sooooo worth it.

Welcome Back to School!

We are already two days in to a new school year. We are adjusting to a new block schedule and we are roasting with temperatures close to 90 (in the classrooms). Some of the changes you will see on the blog include a link (to the right) to the new SSHS Art Department website. This new website allows me to easily upload documents, allowing students to print assignments and worksheets at home. The purpose of this blog will mainly be to showcase student work and to share project ideas with other art teachers around the world.

Currently students are working on their "Get to Know You" projects and I will be showcasing them in a few days, check back soon!

Andy Warhol Collage

The Photo B students are working with people and portraits for the next couple of weeks. In this project students took their own photo using Photo Booth and created an Andy Warhol style piece in photoshop. Students then took that piece and collaged it on tag board with their initials.

Water and Ice

Line Squares

The curriculum in the Art A course focuses primarily on the elements of art. Students just completed the unit on lines. For their final project they are given two squares that is 1 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches. Those squares are pieces of a line drawing that I had created. Students are asked to glue these to squares on their paper and then create their own line drawing based on the lines in the square. I am looking for a variety of lines and creativity.

Mimbre Tribal Designs

The students in the Art A course will be studying the artwork of the Prehistoric, Ancient Egyptian, Classical Greek and Roman, and the Middle Ages. The project completed for the Prehistoric Era was to create a Mimbre Tribal design based on a radial pattern.
